Cavender’s to Sell Paper Torches at the Register in July to Support Special Olympics Texas Athletes
Throughout the month of July, Cavender’s will sell paper torches at each of its 51 Texas stores to symbolize its support for Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) athletes. The paper torches will be available for purchase for $1 at the checkout counter and can be personalized with the buyer’s name or the name of a loved one they want to honor.
Funds raised will go toward providing quality sports competition and training for more than 58,300 children and adults with intellectual disabilities in the state.
“Cavender’s has been such a great partner of our athletes and organization and we are so grateful for their continued support,” said Dr. Richard Brown, Vice President of Resource Development for Special Olympics Texas.
The cowboy boot and western wear retailer has been a generous supporter of SOTX since 2015. Through the first two years of hosting this in-store paper torch promotion, Cavender’s has raised nearly $25,000 for SOTX athletes, including more than $10,000 during last year’s paper torch campaign.
In addition, Cavender’s has been the presenting sponsor for SOTX’s statewide Equestrian Competition for the last two years, which is annually held in May at the Brazos County Expo Center in Bryan for nearly 200 athletes.
Today Cavender’s is distinguished within the industry as a western tradition with 77 stores in the southwest, 52 of them in Texas and a website store. Company founder, James Cavender, is still active and involved. He often can be heard in the halls of Cavender’s headquarters in Tyler, Texas. His wife Pat still decorates all new and remodeled stores. Her diligence and attention to detail helps ensure that customers experience the signature western style in each store. Eldest son, Joe Cavender serves as president of the company while operations and leasing are headed by Mike Cavender. All private-label apparel is developed by Clay Cavender who also serves as vice president of merchandising. The Cavenders credit their success to the dedication and loyalty of their associates.
