Following the Way – August 2017
Today as I write this month’s article, it is with a heavy heart. You must certainly see the things that are going on in our country and the world and it may seem to you that we are coming apart at the seams. It has been said that if we ignore history it will repeat itself. I am not gong to talk today about the removal of monuments from public places. That is for local communities to decide for themselves without outside intervention, including mine! It’s actually none of my business what a community in another state or country decides to do or who they decide to memorialized, wether I think it’s good or bad. I am however going to talk about what Jesus said to us about how to treat one another. I have said it over and over and over again until you are probably sick of it that Jesus gave us a “new commandment” that we “love one another as I have loved you. And by this, they will know you are truly my disciples.” John 13:34-35
In Matthew 5-7 and in Luke 6, we have the account of what we call Jesus’s “Sermon on the Mount” I believe it is more important even than the Ten Commandments because they are the basic rules but this sermon is a treatise on how we should live out the rules. He says (and I paraphrase because it is too long a passage to print here) it is no big deal to just be nice to the people you love that love you back. “Even the pagans do that.” He says, but we are to even love our enemies and those who persecute us. I know! That’s REALLY hard to do. He never said it would be easy. I know that it seems like a more complicated issue than this and maybe it is. But I can’t help but think it’s got to start somewhere. Why not with you? Why not with me? There are unfortunately times when war is gonna happen. When fights will occur. But we can start by NOT fighting and warring amongst ourselves. It says in Ephesians 6:12
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
It is a spiritual warfare we must fight against. Sin is the problem! Jesus is the answer! Start in your own life by renewing your mind to be more like the mind of Christ. If we all do that we can begin to see change. Not in everyone because everyone won’t do it. But you are only responsible for yourself. I am only responsible for me, but I AM responsible for me. That IS my business!
