Music News JULY 07' July is here! What do I think of when July rolls around? Willie’s Picnic of course! I hate to be the barer of bad news but unless you plan on buying a plane ticket it’ll be a long drive to get to the picnic this year. It’s scheduled to be in Washington this year. I know bummer for us Texicans but the red headed stranger won’t be a stranger for long…he’ll be back in Texas in August. I heard a rumor of some shows at the Back yard in Austin. I also caught wind of some movies to be filmed out at Luck (Willie’s western town near Spicewood, Texas). For all you picnic goers have no worries about next years show. Willie assured me it’ll be back here in Texas at Carl’s Corner which is also going to be the new home of Willie’s XM-Satellite channel 13 as well as the home of his Willie Bio-fuel. I ran into Joe Ely at the post office of all places and as he opened his royalty checks and I opened my bills we talked about what’s new. Joe recently recorded a live album with his longtime buddy Joel Guzman. He said they’d been wanting to do that for some time. Joe’s really excited about this CD and you should be too! I’ll keep you posted on the release date. Please check www.JoeEly.com to find out Joe’s tour schedule. It’s official! Cory Morrow is going into the studio this August to record a new album! He’s out on tour now but he’s taking sometime in between his busy schedule to prepare for the recording session. He’s also gearing up for a huge golf tournament. This September the 1st Annual Dell Children’s Muscular Distrophy tournament will be held in Austin. Congratulations to Brandon Rhyder for signing an exclusive publishing deal with the acclaimed Harlan Howard Songs, Inc. Harlan Howard songs, Inc. is one of the most respected publishing houses in the business. Brandon is also gearing up for a release on his latest album which will be released August 21st. The first single “Home Again” was released in June. I talked to Kevin Fowler last week and he’s putting the finishing touches on his album. It should be coming out sometime late this summer. I think I told you guys that I got to hear a sneak peak of the songs and even the duet with George Jones. This is by far my favorite Kevin Fowler album yet! I can’t wait for everyone to hear it! It’s great! Mark your calendars…The 3rd Annual Pauline and Outlaw’s
Picnic has been scheduled! It’s going to be at the House Pasture
Cattle Company in Concan, Texas (near Bandera) on the Frio River! So
far I’ve confirmed Tommy Alverson & Johnny Lee just today
as I wrote this column. This will be a three day event August 16, 17
& 18th with cabin rental available on the premises! Please go to
www.housepasture.com to see the venue. Also check my website to see
the line-up as they get confirmed. Come with me and float the river!
www.PaulineReese.com JUNE 07' Summer is officially here! I’m so ready to go float the Guadalupe River! I convienitly booked some shows down that way. As well as a big show in Concan on the Frio river with my friend Jason Boland. And Randy Rogers and I are at the Coleman Rodeo this year. Yes I’m bringing my horse Blue Diamond and we’re making Randy ride! Check my website and come float and rodeo! Summer brings a lot of fun shows…of course there’s the KVET Texas Music Series every Wednesday at Hill’s Café on S. Congress. If you can’t make it down to Austin then listen online at www.kvet.com This June some of the artists performing are Wade Bowen, Micky and the Motorcars, Ryan Turner and Aaron Watson. It’s always a great time! When I was in Cow town doing a little shopping before my show I ran into singer/songwriter Kyle Everett. His album “Water for my Horses” is out now. He’s moved back to Texas and is going to be doing some acoustic shows so check out Kyle Everett.com and catch a show! Thanks to everyone who came out to support the A.R.C. of the capitol area benefit last month. Laura Trevino daughter of singer/songwriter Geronimo Trevino organized the entire show. Geronimo, Kelley Kenning, Bill Rice and I did a song swap which was supposed to last an hour but we were having so much fun it went on for two. I had met Bill Rice once but never heard his songs and this benefit gave me that opportunity. I was really impressed! He told me he has a new album coming out this July. Check out BillRiceBand.com Mi amigo Kelley Kenning has a lot going on as usual. His latest news is that Johnny Rodriguez is doing a duet on one of Kelley’s songs on his new album. To go with this project they are also cutting a video down in El Campo at Rosie’s Cantina. The bar owner actually named his bar after the song! How cool is that? Johnny Lee is putting one of Kelley’s songs on his new album. I love the title “She beat the cheat out of me”. The single has been released nation-wide Hat Creek Records and is moving up the independent charts as we speak. Go to KelleyKenning.com to find out where Kelley will be next. Geronimo’s book Dance Halls and Last Calls is going to be released nation-wide! This is a wonderful book depicting forgotten dance halls in Texas along with the haunting stories of how they closed down. He also has a CD to go along with the book featuring artists like Willie Nelson, Steve Fromholtz, Geronimo along with many other legends in the business. A few up and comers made it on there as well… If you are a music fan I highly recommend buying the book and CD. It’s a piece of history in Texas music! GeronimoTrevino.com I just got home from Nashville with Freddy and Catherine Powers. We took a road trip up to the volunteer state to check out the Grande Old Opry and meet with some friends of Freddy’s. It must be nice to be in the biz long enough to pull up to the stage entrance and walk right in! Ok Freddy you earned it! I’ll keep everyone posted on the outcome of our trip! Check out CountryLineMagazine.com May 07' April was such an eventful month! Blaine’s 1st Annual Hill Country Picnic was an absolute blast! They had the concert outside in the field next to the Harley Davidson shop in Boerne, Texas. I brought my horse Blue Diamond and kicked it off with the national anthem. I ran into Drew Kennedy who played and he told me his album is about to hit the airwaves! I absconded a copy and it hasn’t left my truck yet! I really love it! Drew and I are linked up on my space. Charlie Robison put on a great show as always. I got to hang out with my amigo Kevin Fowler who is also releasing a new album very soon. Personally I think he’s out done himself! Really! The production, the songs, it’s going to be a big hit. Also last month I had the honor of hanging out with the three time World Champion saddle bronc rider Monte “Hawk Eye” Henson. I did a show at the Cowboy Hall of Fame and he showed up to show his support and even sat in and sang a few songs. Monte sings and plays all around the Dallas/Ft.Worth area. He may be coming down to Austin for a few shows in the near future! I’ll keep you posted. Speaking of Dallas/Ft.Worth, I happen to be killing some time before a radio show and stumbled upon one of the most fun live shows I’ve seen in awhile. The name of the band is Spoonfed Tribe. This band can rock! One part of the show the whole band played drums and percussion. They have four albums and are on tour now! Go to myspace.com/spoonfedtribe or www.spoonfedtribe.com and check them out! Brennen Leigh is about to do a six week tour out East with her brother Seth. So she said she’s gearing up for that along with her other shows here in Central Texas. She’s also recording a duet record with Jesse Dayton to be released by June. To find where Brennen with be next go to www.brennenleigh.com Dan Crump will be back on the airwaves real soon with a re-release of his “Truth Is” CD. He’s got a brand new website you can go see built around his music video “She Likes Shoes”. But the biggest news is the announcement of his engagement to Connie Enderli. No date has been set as of yet. Dan had been doing a lot of writing and is ready to get back out on the road to tour. He’ll hit the trail this June! www.DanCrump.com Todd Fritsch released his CD “Sawdust” on April 17th. The project was produced by Doug Deforest and the single is “What’s Wrong With Me”. I think this album will do really well! It’s out as we speak so go get your copy! Or go to: www.toddfritsch.com or www.myspace.com/toddfritsch Just wanted to give you a heads up on the Texas Music Festival in Bandera, Texas on May 27th! Go to my website for a line up! I have some exciting news! I’ll be heading up to Nashville with
Freddy and Catherine Powers this month to meet with some old friends
of Freddy’s. Sign up on my e-blast on the front page of my website
and I’ll keep you informed on the trip up. Wish me luck! APRIL 07' Houston…Houston means that I’m one day closer to you. Larry Gatlin performed at the Texas Heritage Songwriter Showcase last month at the legendary Hill’s Café along with Billy Joe Shaver & Aaron Barker. You talk about some great stories behind the songs! Larry will be back here in Austin for the Legends of Country Music Festival at Nutty Brown Café coming up in May along with Wade Bowen, Roger Creager, Michael Myers and Brandon Ryder. Billy Joe Shaver’s Greatest Hits CD comes out this month! This CD is not just re-recorded stuff there are some songs that were previously unreleased live and studio versions of his classics! He’ll be performing in the area this May at the Luckenbach Dance Hall. Aaron Barker’s song “Touch” a song inspired about an 11th floor patient at Vanderbuilt Hospital has gotten a lot of attention. He’s currently working on an inspirational album with producer/songwriter Leigh Reynolds. And his song “Love without end Amen” was named one of the top 25 greatest Country songs ever written by Country Weekly! Another reason to talk about Houston would be my amigo Houston Marchman (wonderful singer/songwriter) who is currently working on his tenth album! Yes, you read that right, his tenth album! Houston now lives in the Austin area and is working with Kimmie Rhodes son Gabe Rhodes (fabulous guitar player) on this new project. They hope to release the album sometime this fall. If your itching to see him perform live then you can catch Houston and I along with the High Country Band at Poodie’s Roadhouse on May 11th in Spicewood, Texas or June 8th Houston will be at the legendary Gruene Hall. If you’ve never seen or heard Houston well…where have you been? Check him and his music out at www.HoustonMarchman.com I talked with singer/songwriter Davin James at our show in Old Town Spring at Puffabellys last month. He’s having a good time out there on the road with lots of shows all over the state. His new CD “Palmer Lake” is out right now! Davin is such a talented songwriter I guarantee you’ll love his music. Go to www.DavinJames.com and take a listen for yourself. I had the honor of attending the “Last of the Breed Tour” concert here in Austin last month. Willie Nelson, Freddy Powers, Merle Haggard, Ray Benson & Ray Price are touring the U.S together! Willie’s daughter Paula Nelson kicked off the show with a bang! It was not only a magical moment when they all got out on stage and sang together but for me it was when Freddy Powers whose been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease graced everyone with a song and then sang with Merle all night! He’s setting such a great example for anyone who has this disease in that you should live your life to the fullest everyday! He’s one of the strongest people I know. Here’s to you Freddy P.! To learn more about Parkinson’s Disease go to: www.FreddyPowers.org That’s all for this month, see ya’ll in April amigos!
