In today’s nonstop world of high technology and tools of convenience, many Americans have lost sight of their roots and take their gadgets for granted. Cell phones, computers, microwaves and even electricity haven’t been around since the beginning of time. A new book focusing on the life and times of early pioneers illustrates the hardships and creative ways of living many early Americans had to face before the age of technology.

Living in Pioneer Times was written by Country Line Magazine’s Homespun Editor Shirley Baker. With this book, she hopes to demonstrate to young children how their grandparents and great-grandparents used to live and how they got things done.

The book touches on a large number of topics, ranging from adobe brick to cooking on wood stoves to medicinal remedies used by pioneers. Readers may even discover ideas they want to implement in their lives today. With a glossary in the back, the book is sure to be enjoyed by people of all ages. Baker says Living in Pioneer Times isn’t marketed towards any one group of people; anybody would benefit from reading it.

Part of the idea for the book originated from Baker’s family camping trips.
“Many years ago we used to go camping in a tent, and we used to enjoy what I consider primitive camping,” Baker said. “We loved it. We cooked meals from scratch, and if the kids caught a fish, we’d eat it—what our ancestors used to do.

“After years of collecting and compiling the pioneer way of living, I got the chance to work at the Log Cabin at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga., where I enjoyed relaying the pioneer way of living and existing to those visitors of all ages. That is when I decided to compile all of the information together in a book.”

T.J. Greaney, publisher of Country Line Magazine and host of “The Texas Outdoor Zone” television and radio shows, praised the book.

“I was so excited to see Shirley finally put all of her information in one place,” Greaney said. “As a history buff and avid outdoorsman, I am always intrigued by her pioneer solutions and skills. There are things in her book I have taught my kids and used when I have been hunting and camping.”
