Texas Songwriter U (TxSU), in collaboration with Texas-born singer-songwriter Jack Ingram, the Texas Heritage Songwriters’ Association and The ASCAP Foundation, will close its 4th Annual Texas Songwriter U discovery and development songwriting program’s call-for-entry at midnight, Sunday, September 17th, 2017.
Texas Songwriter U is an annual songwriting competition, educational workshop and showcase event serving to identify, develop and support the best adult songwriters both in and from Texas, while improving upon the quality and quantity of professional songwriting across our state. The annual program will return to Austin, November 1st – November 3rd, 2017.
Panelists joining host Jack Ingram for Texas Songwriter U’s 2017 workshop include two Grammy winners: American country music singer, songwriter and musician Jon Randall, and American country music songwriter Liz Rose. Randall’s hit songs include Brad Paisley’s “Whiskey Lullaby,” Dierks Bentley’s “Am I The Only One,” Blake Shelton’s “Drink On It,” and other songs recorded by Gary Allan, Little Big Town, Sheryl Crow, Guy Clark, and others. Rose is known for her work with Taylor Swift, and as co-writer of hit “Girl Crush,” awarded the 2015 Country Music Association Awards Song of the Year and Single of the Year, as well as a Grammy in 2016 for Best Country Song of the Year.
Texas Songwriter U now accepts application of all lyrical, musical genres into its 2017 competition. Songwriters have until midnight, Sunday, September 17th, 2017, to submit two songs via upload to TexasSongwriterU.com.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and either have been born in Texas, currently live in Texas, or have lived in Texas for five (5) consecutive years. Applicants may hold a current publishing agreement and TxSU will accept both self-published and co-written songs. A $25 processing fee is required of all contest applicants. The structure for judging individual songwriting talent will rely on industry professionals blindly rating each song.
Finalists will enjoy a two-night stay at Hotel Van Zandt, the boutique Kimpton hotel inspired by Austin’s prolific music scene. All meals will be provided to finalists throughout their stay.
The Texas Songwriter U workshop will kick-off on Thursday, November 2nd and wrap-up on Friday, November 3rd at the Gibson Brands Showroom in Austin. Here, workshop leadership will announce an overall selected songwriter at the conclusion of the 2017 workshop.
These eight finalists will also participate in two incredible Austin performances. First, they will perform in our Texas Songwriter U Kick-off on Wednesday, November 1st at 7:00 pm, upon an in-house stage at Yeti Flagship, housed in a fully restored, early 20th century building located just south of Lady Bird Lake and the Congress Bridge. On Thursday, November 2nd at 8:00 pm, a Texas Songwriter U Showcase will highlight each finalist in a live music performance before a packed house in Austin’s premier listening room, The Saxon Pub. Texas Songwriter U will honor these finalists and each will perform during a two hour session following opening performances by Jack Ingram, Jon Randall and Liz Rose.
The 2017 Texas Songwriter U selected songwriter, chosen from its eight finalists, will be awarded the following:
An opportunity to co-write one song with Jack Ingram and Liz Rose
An opening for Jack Ingram at a concert or music festival of his choice, travel expenses paid
A performance at the 2017 MJM (Mack, Jack & McConaughey) charity after-pick party
