Survey finds Americans have serious habits when it comes to pretzel consumption

Today is National Pretzel Day 2017, and since it began 34 years ago, on April 26, 1983, the holiday has gained popularity across the country. National Pretzel Day was started by Robert S. Walker, a Pennsylvania State Representative at the time, who wanted to have a special holiday for his favorite food.

Just in time for this year’s celebration of all things pretzel a recent national survey conducted by SUPERPRETZEL, the nation’s #1 soft pretzel, showed that Americans have serious habits when it comes to pretzel consumption.

“Regardless of how people choose to eat their soft pretzels, one thing is for sure, they can’t get enough of this snacking staple,” said Alissa Davis, vice president of marketing for J&J Snack Foods Corp. “Whether dipping a traditional SUPERPRETZEL Soft Pretzel in cheese or indulging in our SUPERPRETZEL PretzelDogs with a side of ketchup and mustard, we encourage our fellow pretzel lovers nationwide to join in this tasty celebration!”

  • When eating a soft pretzel, 17 percent eat the knot first and then the curve while 65 percent eat the curves first, and save the knot for last
  • 13 percent of those surveyed eat their soft pretzels plain, 17 percent like mustard or chocolate and 28 percent of people prefer cheese at their topping
  • 69 percent of those considering eating their pretzel with another flavor want to dip their pretzel

A national survey conducted by SUPERPRETZEL Soft Pretzels in celebration of National Pretzel Day found that Americans have strong preferences when it comes to their pretzel-eating habits. (PRNewsfoto/J&J Snack Foods Corp.)
