What’s Blooming in April Across Texas
The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
Before the sweltering days of Summer are upon us in Central Texas we are blessed with an amazing abundance of wildflowers, many thanks to the efforts of former First Lady of Texas and the United States, Lady Bird Johnson. If you haven’t visited the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Southwest Austin, you really don’t know what you are missing. From landscape photography and Yoga classes, wildflower education and garden tours, their events calendar is full of fun, interesting and inviting events for all ages.
The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center also posts a yearly wildflower forecast that is available online: The 2017 Wildflower Forecast
Find out what is in season, and everyone is invited to come out and celebrate National Wildflower Week, May 1-7, 2017, with special events planned every day. You can even RSVP via their Facebook event to be notified with updates and to invite friends to join in!
Visit the “Official Bluebonnet City of Texas”
Taking a day trip to the north central wildflower region during the spring will never be a disappointment. Located a little over 3 hours north of Austin, the city of Ennis, Texas, home of the “Official Texas Bluebonnet Trail” and designated the “Official Bluebonnet City of Texas,” from April 1-30 showcases over 40 miles of mapped driving Bluebonnet Trails sponsored by the Ennis Garden Club. You can download the Ennis Bluebonnet Trails Map through their app and you can even join a 2 hour guided trail tour (only on select weekends in April) where you can enjoy the bluebonnets from the comfort of a small tour bus, rather than driving your own vehicle.
You also can enter their annual photo contest, find out about dining, shopping and lodging on the Ennis Texas Convention and Visitors Bureau website.
The Texas Hill Country
While it appears bluebonnets may have peaked in Brenham, there are still reports of plenty of other wildflower species, including Indian blanket and Mexican hat, to enjoy according to the Wildflower Watch website.
The Wildflower Loop around Johnson City is a must for anyone who enjoys Texas Wildflowers. Contact the Johnson City Chamber to find out about their touring shuttle service and events happening through the wildflower season.
The scenic Willow City Loop near Fredericksburg, Texas is another great day trip location. Heading toward Llano, Texas, the terrain changes from pastoral, gently rolling hills to a dramatic, rugged landscape of deep canyons, sky reaching jagged cliffs, meandering streams and phenomenal panoramic views. All year round you’ll be amazed by this spectacular countryside, BUT during a good Wildflower Season (March – May), you’ll discover “take-your-breath-away” inspirational natural beauty.
